Zoom Room: an overview of the new features

Do Zoom's engineers ever sleep? The answer is very short: not really! Right after releasing updates for the desktop and mobile clients and for the webinar application, Zoom released several new features for Zoom Rooms.

Zoom Room is a system for conference rooms that delivers outstanding video and audio quality, wireless content sharing, built-in calendars and extensions, Digital Signage and Scheduling Display. All of this runs on off-the-shelf hardware.

Here is what is new in the latest Zoom Room update:

Zoom Rooms booking

Thanks to the update of the Zoom Room booking feature, your administrators can optimize the use of meeting rooms by having the user check in to the room they scheduled. Users can check in to the room via the scheduling display or through the controller, start or join a meeting, or use the screen sharing capabilities in the Zoom Room. If they do not do so within a certain time (set by the administrator) after the scheduled start time of their meeting, the room becomes available in the calendar system. This stops people from occupying a room without actually using it and maximizes the use of the organization's rooms.

A unique design for the scheduling display

You can now customize the background image of a room's scheduling display with the image you prefer. This lets you fully brand meeting rooms with your logo or give each display its own image related to that room's theme.

Support for new languages

Zoom Room now supports every language that Zoom already supported on our mobile and desktop platforms. We already worked with English and Chinese (traditional and simplified). Now Mac and Windows Zoom Room and iOS Zoom Room controllers also support Japanese, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Russian.

Advanced control of Logitech cameras

Part of what makes working with Zoom Rooms convenient is the ability to control a PTZ camera right from the Zoom Rooms tablet controller and to create presets for the best camera position and zoom. Zoom has long supported cameras and speakerphones from our friends at Logitech. To speed up setting the camera angle and zoom, we now support presets for two more Logitech cameras, the Logitech Rally and the Logitech MeetUp.

An improved Zoom Room dashboard

The Zoom Dashboard has long been able to detect a problem with a room's equipment, such as a disconnected device. Now we have added a room health warning, whose indicator signals “No issues”, “Warning” or “Critical” depending on how serious the problem is. In the Zoom portal an administrator can manage their rooms by “health status”. This makes it quick to see which rooms may be having problems, which allows all Zoom rooms to be managed more efficiently.

Improved compatibility with Polycom Trio

In June 2018 Polycom announced that it was joining forces to support Zoom Rooms with the Polycom conference phone, the Polycom Trio. The Polycom Trio can work with the Zoom Rooms controller interface, which makes working with Zoom easy and efficient. Polycom Trio firmware with Zoom Rooms controller support is already available and should be used with the latest version of Zoom Rooms for advanced feature control.

Zoom customers can update their rooms remotely from the Zoom administrator portal, and we are also ready to help you with this. If all these interesting new features appeal to you, you can request a personal “one-on-one” demo from the Rightconf specialists.
