In a large webinar, each viewer normally pulls their own stream from the internet. A thousand people in an office means a thousand streams. Zoom Mesh changes the scheme: the stream arrives at several parent machines, which distribute it to everyone else inside the local network.
The arithmetic says it better than any words. Two thousand webinar participants at an average stream of 1 Mbps require a 2000 Mbps internet link. With Mesh, at fifty children per parent, only forty streams are needed — 40 Mbps. That is more than 90 percent saved.
In regular meetings the effect is more modest and depends on the size of the meeting and the layouts: Zoom estimates typical savings at 20–80 percent.
An important difference from third-party eCDNs: Mesh is built on the same platform and the same Zoom clients. There is no need to set up a separate broadcast layer and manage it separately.
