Direct Connectpaid

Dedicated links between your data centers and the Zoom cloud, bypassing the public internet.

What it is

Direct Connect is a direct network connection from your network to Zoom data centers. Real traffic from meetings, webinars, phone, meeting rooms and SIP gateways runs over dedicated lines instead of the internet.

Terminations are redundant: at least two data centers per region. You will need public addresses and your own autonomous system number.

Zoom is upfront about the downsides too, and they are worth knowing before you buy. The solution is expensive: you pay both the transit provider and Zoom. It is complex to deploy and maintain. It adds no security in itself — encryption is already there. It does not guarantee better quality, because Zoom is already built to work over real-world networks. And it limits you to the nodes you connect to.

There is a technical caveat as well: some traffic — metadata and the web backend — will still go over the internet. Meetings hosted on real-time cloud resources may also not use the dedicated link.

What you get

Bypassing the internet

Media and signaling run over dedicated lines.

Redundancy

Terminations in at least two data centers in the region.

Strict policies

A solution for those who are not allowed ordinary internet connections.

Predictability

Known link parameters instead of variable internet.

Region choice

Connection to the Zoom regions you need.

What is required of you

Public addresses and your own autonomous system number.

Where it is used

Typical scenarios

Internet not allowed

Internal security policies do not permit ordinary connections.

A quality requirement

You need a predictable, contracted service level.

A large data center

You have your own network, your own ASN and people to operate it.

What Zoom warns about

The other side of the solution
  • Expensive: a transit provider plus Zoom's fee
  • Complex to deploy and maintain
  • Adds no security in itself — encryption is already there
  • Limits access to the subset of nodes you are connected to
  • Metadata and the web backend still go over the internet
